I stand here, barely awoken, staring into space
half a breath away from everything, I feel like
nothing so much as a dream on it's fading away
and that feeling is far too comfortable
for me to really get much peace of mind

So I sit down to play some guitar,
sing some of that feeling aloud
hoping it might help, and it does
but it also makes me feel I've stumbled into
a world that's falling asleep just as I wake up

like as if I was a lover out of time
who has to go to work right before his other half
comes home from her's
and all they have are notes exchanged in the hall
on a little space their love is full of notes
and they're hoping it'll be enough
for love to not only last, but remain the love they know
those notes through a time of such small regards
having to be enough for love to get by on

For me, that's how I feel waking up
to a world always about to fall asleep
and I look for a note in my hall and find none
so I write things like this to let that world of mine know

at least, if nothing else, I still wish to let you see
my love might have grown pale over the years
but it isn't gone

and I sometimes feel a response,
from that old world of mine
and even if it's all in my imagination
I'm glad to hear the trembling breath drawn
of a world about to fall asleep murmuring

"I love you too, love, even if
we're neither one of us that strong
don't forget what was
a love once strong faltering
is still love, is it not?"

To which I reply truthfully in my tiredness
"that it is, my love, the best we can manage,
and it's gonna have to be enough
for I won't be giving up on love just because
things got too hard for us to be as we were
and that what once was, was love
and what we got still, is love,
best we can manage with things being
as they are."
