She told me
About the evening
She wore a very
Short skirt, and,
In a hotel car-park,
Bent over for the
Best-friend of the man
She would marry
Some short years
In her future,
Then went back
Inside to the party.

She was seventeen
In that car-park,
And so I can’t think
About it too much.

Some care is also
Required if thinking
About the stories
From her weekends
Working as a
Make-up girl;
Cashing up with
The manager
After hours, and
Letting him bend
Her across a table
Piled with money.

She worked there
Aged seventeen to
Twenty-four; so
I am safer with
The later years.

Nonetheless,
I do not need all
These details of
Bending back
And forth;
Lady, please,
Have some mercy;
Either bend over
This desk and
My scattered papers
Or leave me
To write in peace.
