I heard you,
Twisting the knob,
Sending the door in a soft schuss
Across the wooden floor.

But I lay still,
Crouching around myself,
Back like a shell,
Heart pumping out a syncopated measure
To my body’s lower desires.

I heard you,
Breath coming quicker,
Scuffing, shifting on bare feet,
Champagne softly bubbling and swishing,
Splashing in the tumbler you held.

But I lay still,
A sham sleeper,
As awake as the wine sparkling in your hand.
Like it, I longed to effervesce against your full lips,
To meet with your mouth and mingle with your tongue.
But, instead, I lay still.
