My more personal poems were much better received, but whatever. I’m still returning to when I did narrative poems.

I say nothing
Prideful people speak
So I keep the words to myself
But I am better than you
Because I know
That I am nothing
I am expendable
I am not meant to live for myself
But you can’t see the truth
So I am better than you
I am better than you
Because I ask for nothing
I fight and I suffer and I bleed
For people who I don’t even know
I don’t need to know
Because I am better than you
I am better than you
I sleep on the floor
I eat greens and beans and brown crackers
I gleefully took my rifle with puberty
After years of drawing letters and finger paints
Shipped out for The Fighters
And so when I enlist as an adult
I’ve already learned all the basics
But you don’t know this
Because I say nothing
As I am better than you
