after checking in at admission
then while sitting in the waiting room
waiting for hand surgery
I saw and heard a man who was coughing
and sitting across from us

they called me back to a nurses room
and after making sure it was really me
the nurse said her father was still working in
irrigation

then when the surgery was over
they wheeled me back to the waiting room
where I was told that the man who had been
sitting across from us
had woken up that morning with an
ear and eye infection

and why Ive shunned being happy for so long
I do not know
perhaps it was when hans turned into mnst
my hands being the monster I missed
also known as the great omission in my life
and when I think of the heel I have become
would it all have been different
if I had only missed not being wed
