Like a Leaf

I planted a tree,
when I was wee.
"Like a tree,
you'll both grow,
just you wait and see."

Horizon darkens,
winter approaches.
Like a tree,
I stand outside,
to face the storm.

Hat pulled tight,
fingers gloved.
Like a tree,
branches bared,
winter prepared.

My timeworn friend,
we talk again.
Like a tree,
I grew tall.
Unlike you, I now bend.

Forgive me, if I perceive,
life is not like a tree.
Like a leaf,
I grew from bud to green,
to autumn's glory.

The season grows late,
my kindred are falling.
Like a leaf,
my color faded,
shriveled, wrinkled.

A life spent tethered,
to figurative trees.
Like a leaf,
it's time I let go,
and set myself free!

I watch my brethren,
flutter to earth.
Like a leaf,
my arms spread wide,
I wish, I too, could fly!

But there is no peace,
here on the ground.
Like a leaf,
swirling and roiling,
driven by forces unseen.

Serenity beacons.
I seek an eddy,
like a leaf.
A quiet place,
where I can rest.

Thank you for your kind comment, @Satyr61. I've been neglecting my first love, poetry, in favor of stories. I hope to submit more frequently now.

An older man realizes his death is on the horizon, and visits a tree he planted in his youth. The tree is straight, tall, and as magnificent as ever, while he is now wrinkled and bent. He reflects on the fact that he is less like the tree, and more like a leaf. He wished for his freedom, but when he took it, he found he is still being pushed around by unseen forces like a leaf in the wind, and he looks instead for a quiet place where he can rest.
