Click hereYou smile at those coming toward you,
Smiles different and varied as the birdsong,
Many worthy of return.
Most smiles warm. Offhand. Easy:
The mothers, fresh, pushing strollers.
The widows, grouped, gentle.
The trainers, tight, cold and quick.
The empty-nesters, loose-ended in September.
The runners, eye-rolling, endorphined.
Some smiles, though, smoulder:
Bold. Brave. Bursting out
Like the bra-strap from a collar.
Like the tattoo, whispering past a waistband.
Like the sway of hips, advertising.
Like the dare of a bared shoulder.
Those smiles so brazen.
Those glances so coy.
Those bodies so saucy.
So you stop. You say, "Hi,"
Your smile as confident as you can make it.
Her eyes flicker, appraising,
And her smile changes.
You hope it grows instead of shrinks.
