I came out of the local coffee shop, minding my own affairs.
Suddenly the girl of my dreams walks by when I wasn't aware.
I stared her down. Eye fucked her hard.
Yet, she doesn’t even seem to notice me.

I move forward with purpose now. Committed.
This woman is mine. Convinced it.
I catch up to her and leap in front of her.
She lays there dead in her tracks.

“Hello, can I help you?!” She bellows out.
‘Of course you can… but you don’t know how yet.’ I think to myself.
She eyes me up and down— thinking this just another desperate
man trying his luck. She could never know just how truly wrong she was.

I do the same to her. She’s sophisticated. She’s classy.
She wears her hair up and her blouse down.
It’s cold. She bundles up in the fur of an unlucky chinchilla.
Red, high heels. She’s almost at my level.

“I love you!” I spring out of a beaten, bruised heart.
“You what?!”
“I love you.” I reply.
“You’re crazy!” She goes to walk away. “You don’t even know me.”

“Oh no, but I do." I block her path. "Somehow. I knew it from the first of sight.”
I well up. She slaps me. Both of us single; both in our 30s.
“I love you!” I protest. “Don’t say that!” She shouts. “Someone could take that
seriously you know, then how would you feel?”
I say, “Someone? I only have eyes for you.”

She begins to well up too. Like thirty-something years of chasing just caught up with you.
I exhale one long, tainted breathe. She looks up at me. Tears down her face. Mascara all astray.
I say, “you still look beautiful, my dear.” I wipe her cheeks away. “Crying won’t change that anyway.”
She looks at me center-stare with fierceness in her eyes. “Do you truly love me? I mean
DO YOU TRULY LOVE ME?! Don’t lie to me please.” She says softly. “I’ve been hurt much too many times.” She ducks her head in shame.

“I do. I do. Of course, I do.” I pick up her head. From here there’s no turning back.
My cheeks puff, my eyes water, tears stream.
This is exactly how I pictured it’d be from that old- old- timey dream!
She wallows. I ball. We embrace and hold each other tight.

I pull away for a moment just to kiss my princess once and for all.
She tugs my hair and kisses me there— in front of that bustling city street.
Time to clasp hands. Return to that strut and walk off into the sunset.
It’s that easy boys; don’t live with regret.. take what
you want when you see it without a moment’s rest!
