Orient hot spring
side of the valley
his name is Johnny
her name is Sally,
Both cut from the
same bolt of cloth
attracted to open flames
like a moth,

Mid-week
smoking a joint
naked, of course
that’s the point,
Spring sun
warm on their skin
talking about
where they had been,

Been to the coast
their VW bug
feel the pull
the Pacific tug,
Spending nights
under stars on the ground
distant howl
of the coyote sound,

Walked to the end
of the deep-water pier
curve of the Earth
seemed very near,
Big ocean ships
going and coming
some 60-rock song
both of them humming,

Drove the southern
route back here
a different type
of coyote to fear,
Stopped at a couple
small border towns
drinking tequila
making the rounds,

Back to the mountains
spring in full fashion
enjoying the nature
of their passion,
While trying to make
sense of it all
knowing the house
of cards may soon fall,
