Sometimes in the night
I will awake from nervous dreams.

My breathing might be rapid, my
heart pounding in my chest.

But then I turn
toward her warm and somnolent body,

settle my hand on her long thigh
and spoon up behind her welcoming length

and her closeness calms me,
settles me,

and even though she never wakes,
she loves me back to sleep.
