Waiting for the morning
waiting for the day
wait for my co-pilot
to climb aboard and say,
The required safety briefing
the direction of our flight
where we should be landing
later-on tonight,

I feel the engines rumble
runway lights speed by
wondering if this old
airplane can fly,
Then the dusty Earth
drops and disappears
up above the clouds
the sum of all my fears,

Pour a cup of coffee from
my ancient Thermos bottle
adjust the mixture
adjust the throttle,
Look over my shoulder
where you’re not sitting, there
no one ever said
we are the perfect pair,

Perhaps a week from now
or a week ago
you say you know a bar
where we can always go,
Drink wine or whiskey
beer or lemonade
things we wouldn’t do
were we not getting paid,

Is time of the essence
or just a handy marker
I look out the window
clouds are getting darker,
Feel the touch of your fingers
on my shoulder, bare
ask for a deviation
and brush aside your hair ….
