I promised to pull night duty
And have been on call for some months now.
Little Kyle howls his commands
Like some half-crazed Captain Bligh,
And here I come ready to obey,
Diaper in hand, bottle in the warmer.
When his orders have been fulfilled,
And he’s allowed me to salute and retire,
I crawl back into bed again,
Close enough to your nightgowned back
To smell your clean soft hair.
I know if I put my arms around
Your sleeping body
And kissed you on your back,
That bewitched spot just below your neckline,
You will turn and flow into my arms like water,
Offering me all a thirsty man could imbibe.
But this night I will content myself
With a few strands of your lavender-laced locks
Across my cheek as I drift off into
The silence our Captain so graciously
Allows us . . . at least for now.
