You saw me from a distance
I reached out to you as a friend
We were both naïve to what would happen

You were the protector I’d craved
I was the sunshine you'd pursued
We were wistful in our dreams

You renewed hope that had been fleeting
I gave comfort when you were concerned
We elicited growls, smiles, and tears alike

You were already committed
I could never be all you need
We knew forever would never be

You still see me from a distance
I still reach out to you as a friend
We will always have that connection

Even though I am not yours, and you are not mine

Did not flow well for me, but last line resonated — defines. Very nice.

This breaks my heart - because I feel it so strongly. It's what I'm living right now

This...

I know this feeling. Bittersweet. That "what if" lingering in your mind at certain times. Timing is never right, ships in the night.
