Old log sauna
by the lake
a little give
a little take,
Spring is here
blue sky bright
lake still cold
the coming night,

We make a fire
drink some wine
both of us
feeling fine,
But both in need
of a diversion
considering
an excursion,

The sauna small
and smoky dark
others have
left their mark,
Carved initials
in the wood
where friends
and naked strangers would,

Laugh and talk
of life and sex
all the usual
suspects,
We’d been there
down that road
across that lake
we once rowed,

So hang our clothes
on the nails
fill up
the water pails,
Let the breeze
brush our skin
open up
and go in,

Skin to skin
we sweat profusely
in the present
at least mostly,
But as our bodies
absorb the heat
our fantasies
merge and meet,

No different time
no different place
no finish line
or epic race,
Just the comfort
of each other
with nothing new
to discover,
