In a state of disrepair
north of South Dakota
driving an old relic
a ’61 DeSoto,
The size of a living room
tail fins like a jet
no, answer your question
we are not there, yet,

From Boston to Seattle
seemed like a good ride
seat like a park bench
you by my side,
Radio broken
windows both rolled down
but more and more concerned
about that loud new sound,

Then a cloud of smoke
a bang I won’t forget
side of the two-lane
as stuck as one could get,
A little while later
farmer with a tractor
agrees to be our savior
your smile was a factor,

Pushed into his barn
some miles down the way
that ‘61 DeSoto
had had a better day,
We spent the night with him
his wife made dinner too
through most of that meal
he looked mostly at you,

He gave us a ride to Rugby
where we caught the train
Amtrak Empire Builder
to the Seattle rain,
In that barn today
that DeSoto still resides
the farmer said he’s fix it
but then he up and died,
