Battle Mountain
seventy-five
young and happy
feeling alive,
Geo surveying
the sagebrush sea
then back to town
and out to see,

If I could fine
steak and beer
my reflection in
a saloon mirror,
Bartender said
couple blocks down
I might enjoy
what others found,

Drove there in
the company truck
inside the door
just my luck,
Four girls waiting
each with a smile
offering, with me
to spend awhile,

One was Asian
one was black
one with long
hair down her back,
Fourth one had
red hair, green eyes
Each one had
her own surprise,

I had a beer
we talked a bit
though I didn’t smoke
a cigarette lit,
One girl asked:
“who do you like?”
Had money, time
the rest of the night,

So, I took my time
paced myself
as I took each girl
down off the shelf,
Went with her
the end of the hall
listened to distant
coyotes call,

Then my motel
‘bout 2 a.m.
remembering time
with each of them,
But the next morning
I tried to recall
was I even there
really? at all …
