on cool nights like this
a fog approaches from street level
and slowly surrounds my small house
like a burglar casing the joint
I open the window and there is a smell in the air
that reminds me of my childhood collie
when his coat was wet from the rain
I strain my eyes in the darkness
the yellow street lamp causes reflections
in the fog and nothing can be plainly seen
I close the window and return to my bed
it is late in the night
it is at times like this I go back in my memory
like a dealer shuffling cards
back to the first night I met you
how you let me make love to you
on the living room sofa
while your parent slept up stairs
and how you refused to let me kiss your lips
saying you had promised your boyfriend
no one else would share them
