She wanted to tell them, but the darkness wouldn’t let her.
Why couldn’t anyone see the darkness? How it pulled her, moved her, manipulated her.
Why couldn’t they see how it licked away the tears before they fell when people were near, but wouldn’t let them stop flowing when she was alone?
How were they def to to the unkind words it screamed in her ears? The words that drowned out anything positive spoken on the outside?
The darkness pulled on her marionette strings: dance, smile, laugh.
The outside was happy perfection basking in the glow of life. But the inside was frightening. A perpetual storm of chaos and darkness.
Her brain screamed, but her smile shone.
“Thank you, my friend. It’s a beautiful day.”
The darkness weighs heavy, and many conceal it.
Yet when the brain screams, the smile can shine.
Isn’t that the miracle of being human?
And, too…the burden of being human?
Thank you for this beautiful poem.
