She asked me to swim the devils lake
A taunt, A dare
Promises of sultry things to come
If I can make it there

She’d seen me dance with the devil before
It was only fair
To try and push me further
And because I’d not been there

She poked and prodded
Trying to make me care
Impending doom
Or would I make it there

I hear the devil’s laughter
I feel the singe of my hair
She only smiled at me
Wondering if I’d go there

Minutes turned to hours
Struggling in the lair
I swam through the lake of fire
Praying I could make it there

My strength started to flag
Gazing through the glare
I now hear her laughing
Joining the devil there

Battered and burned
Adding to the scare
I reached yon far shore
I had made it there

How does one swim with the devil
When he uses a siren to wail
I should have paid the fare
And let the ferry man take me there

Good work. Love the imagery. I’ll second the mention of Cat Stevens!

Incredibly powerful. Thanks for mentioning Cat Stevens. One of my fave singer/songwriters. Awesome poem.
