Gone is the gleam
Of vitality in her eyes
Dull shallow green
Only shine when she cries

Bowed head in torment
Confusion and rage
Inarticulate misery
Confined to the cage

Of penance and loss
She’s locked herself in
Walked into it willingly
Atone for her sins

Trust and frail hope
His weapons of choice
He’s taken her heart
Her soul and her voice

She huddles within
Bereft of her spark
He leaves her in chaos
Alone in the dark

His marks on her skin
His brand on her soul
His contempt of her heart
That will never be whole
