Click hereI stood on the headland this morning,
And called your name to the sea.
Hoping in vain for the wind to reach you,
And return with mine on its breath.
As the wind blew stronger I called again,
Then again and again as I fell to my knees.
My voice hoarse and by degrees dying,
From screaming so long at the sky.
The gulls mocked while I sobbed myself empty,
Until wearily I stood and trudged away.
Head bowed and broken hearted,
To return again tomorrow.
Beautiful!
The imagery and emotion are powerful.
The wind and gulls are very present.
The longing is painful.
Well done!
You could be standing on the shores of Norway hoping the Viking men return from a raid, or on the ships of Holland waiting for the Dutch East Indies ships, or for all the British sailors when Brittania ruled the waves. Or perhaps, the Titanic? Or on any warships of any age. Or the family of Irish immigrant, wondering? Or, even today, with any lost love. Very universal and timeless.
