Whose is the name
That dances on the breeze,
That shimmers in the water,
Is whispered by the trees?

Has he eyes of clearest blue
And hair of brightest gold?
And will I chance to meet him
Ere I am grey and old?

If I see him, shall I know him
Or will it take long years to see
This is the lad whose name the wind
So sweetly sung to me?

And shall he know me if we meet,
Will he own me as his own
Or will he turn aside
And leave me there alone?

If he leaves me, shall I mourn
And wish we had not met
Or will that meeting be enough
Though it be all I ever get?

Will the sight of his fair face
And sound of his clear voice
Sustain me in the drought
And desert of his choice?

Or will I fail and fade,
A withered tree and bare,
Brought to desolation by
The lad with golden hair?
