in a sterile room of muted light lanced with dust
a man lay dying to the rhythm of medical monitors
his begging eyes rimmed with fearful tears
a final question unspoken through ragged breath

his child looks on with dispassionate gaze
at those aged hands, trembling and frail
which once firmly held a brutal belt, and worse
many words wait within yet they stand silent

to err is human but what lays there? isn't
to forgive is divine but some things? unforgivable
