We danced on the sand at ocean's edge,
pungent pine needles oozing
sticky golden glue-sap,
a bed of brittle gray slivers
scattered helter-skelter underfoot

Jeans rolled up over our ankles,
feet bare and numb,
September's frigid sea-foam spit on
our shivering skin,
leaving its salty, frothy splotches

The ruby ring you slid
over the bump of knuckle,
pressing it down, to finger's base
--It glistened,
flickered,
throbbed--
Scarlet tears bleeding over the
deserted, silent beach

Silver waning moon,
slim crescent sliding into black water
leaving only
dancing black shadows
that
held me,
held me,
the night you left
