Tick, tick, tick.
The second hand continues around the clock.
Followed by the minute hand.
The hour is next.
Around in a circle. Tick, tick, tick.
She checks her messages again.
The phone doesn’t ring.
The doorbell doesn’t chime.

Tick, tick, tick.
Her heart slowly cracks with each sound.
One tiny tear falls.
And her breathing fades away.
But the hands never stop.
Tick, tick, tick
