Liked to drive the road alone
before the invent of the cellular phone
in a dark green Mustang car
lonely backroads near and far,
Crooked smile and lovely wit
didn’t bother her a bit
locals asked what she did
past and future both well hid,

Stop at bars along the way
have a drink about mid-day
learn the history of the town
and the country all around,
Flirt a bit with the bartender
usually fat but sometimes slender
couple locals in the place
study the lines on their face,

“How far to the next town
or should, perhaps, I stick around?”
bartender usually had advise
fill her drink and talk real nice,
At times the dark would find her there
red ribbon pulled from her hair
crowded bar and weekend band
all the noise that one could stand,

The placed closed about two
then the question “what to do?”
a cowboy said he had a place
that she could stay, just in case,
Took her there in his pickup truck
some girls have all the luck
slept until the coffee smell
woke her up, what the hell …
