Driving north from Denver
a day in early June
radio in the company truck
some catchy country tune,
Hot sun shining bright
across the state line
wind blowing in Wyoming
it does that all the time,

Outskirts of Laramie
short of the Interstate
collect a woman there
girl by the name of Kate,
She and I are working
the same survey crew
pick her up on the way
on the way to something new,

Have done jobs before
in Nevada and Utah
we enjoyed each other
liked what we saw,
Now both our hormone levels
are common for the time
we know we like tequila
with a twist of lime,

The plan is to meet
I-80 interchange
Holiday Inn parking lot
out on the open range,
And there she is standing
with her bag and her braids
for the next couple days
my memory somewhat fades,

Shake each other’s hand
certainly not a hug
but hormones remind me
of my then youthful tug,
Cups of road coffee
fill the truck and go
head out of town
Rock River and Medicine Bow,

Then north to Casper
and Thermopolis
through the empty landscape
just the two of us,
We talk about nothing
the radio fades away
when we arrive in Cody
we call it a day,

Motel has eight rooms
we are 1 and 2
a bar and a café
the sky Wyoming blue,
Agree to meet for dinner
in ‘bout half an hour
just enough time
for a cold shower,

Medium rare steaks
long-neck bottle beer
cafe somewhat crowded
we sit pleasingly near,
To each other
touch hip to hip
pay with company credit
and leave a nice tip,

The evening is early
the bar right next door
a mechanical bull
and well-used dance floor,
We have another beer
band starts to play
“would you like to dance?”
“sure, why not, ok,”

Every third tune
is a country lullaby
we hold each other close
as time slips by,
Then exit the back door
look up towards the west
a million stars shining
and you know the rest …

You're the Jack Kerouac of this site. You deserve a wider audience.
