Hooked-up at a bar
the usual way
both drinking
end of the day,
Both looking
for something to do
perhaps a night
with someone new,

I was drinking a glass
of Malbec red
you said you’d have
Chardonnay instead,
The place was crowded
noisy and hot
truth be told
we liked it a lot,

Traded stories
some of them true
avoiding the topic
what we might do,
More glasses of wine
were ordered and sipped
thoughtful bartender
was amply tipped,

The night was early
out the back door
down to the river
past store after store,
Selling everything
under the sun
looked in the windows
just for fun,

At first we didn’t
then we did
hold hands
we slowly slid,
Into the groove
walking together
evening was warm
late-summer weather,

The River Bistro
we had a bite
more glasses of wine
that sealed the night,
Your place was far
mine wasn’t close
Old River Hotel
was a good choice,

A small room
top floor, in the rear
and, believe it or not
a disco mirror,
Rotating there
above the bed
paisley curtains
of yellow and red,

Both in a bit of a
retro-vibe
I undid your buttons
let your dress slide,
The length of your legs
down to the flooring
exposing emotions
we’d both had storing,

You undid my belt
unzipped my fly
unbuttoned my shirt
and asked me why,
I wasn’t somewhere
with someone known
could have asked you same
but like an ice cream cone,

I like the taste
of each different flavor
if only once
like to savor,
I undid the hook
on the back of your bra
slipped off your panties
and let them fall,

Like a floating leaf
to the hardwood floor
there you stood naked
have you done this before?
You helped me remove
the rest of my clothes
been here before
yes, I suppose,

We made love slow
not some contest
the disco ball turned
did its best,
Flashes of light
bouncing off the ceiling
not sure about you
but I enjoyed the feeling,

We stayed there
an hour or two
did the things
new lovers do,
But then checked out
before midnight
each got an Uber
and took flight,

We each sent a text
when we got home
telling the other
were safe, alone,
A week later
we replayed the motion
perhaps, this time
with less emotion,

Never got
to date three
I guess it just
was not to be,
we talked a few times
on the phone in bed
without paisley curtains
flashing yellow and red,

I liked that there were several places where the thoughts didn't get resolved at the end of a stave but continued one or two lines into the next one. It gave the story a feeling of urgency, as if the two lovers were each just trying to get to the end in a hurry so that they could get to their next partners.
