Your Dracaena

There is a dragon inside.
She has always been there, strong but quiet.
She dreams and aspires, she feels... but has no sense at all.
She was content with a dark corner of my heart to call her own.

Then you came.
Shining as Odysseus to Nausikaa.
Athena shed grace upon your soul so that I became enraptured, and couldn’t look away.
Perhaps a Trojan horse... but, god help me, a gift I’d open again.
And again.

You coaxed my little firebreather out of the dark, invited into the warmth of your gaze.
You showed her a new place to thrive.
Outside of me, accepted in the shelter of your heart.
Fed by your hand; nurtured with passion and kindness.
She felt connection. Joy. Home.
She unfurled her wings and jumped,
Flying high on euphoria and possibility.

Now it is done.
There have been tears and fear, but not regret.
She wants what she wants.
She is no longer content with me, but belongs to you.
You hold her gently, cautiously, but confident.
She purrs contentedly, knowing you are near.

Danger dances with light, a seductive tango.
Their whirlwind blows around me and I cannot see.
You guide me gently, but firmly, away from the precipice.
You see me, all of me, and understand.
In that moment your wisdom and strength endear me to you even more.
So much more than a friend, but a friend still. Beautiful.
I am tormented. I am blessed.
She is yours.
