Finally, I said. "You continue to amaze me. I feel like the luckiest man in the world."

She smiled, "You're in bed with a bullet wound that barely missed your heart. You have handcuffs shackled to your bed. You have charges of parental interference still pending against you. And you can't mow lawns in that condition. What the Hell makes you lucky?"

"I have my wife and my son."

"You mean Trudy and Brian?"

"No, you and Jason." I had trouble calling him his birth name.

"Well, I guess I do qualify as your 'common-law wife.'"

"Not for long, I hope. Leila, will you marry me?"

"Are you sure, Andy or are you overmedicated? By the way, my real name is Julie."

"I am very sure whatever your name is."

"Yes, but can we get married before you go to jail, if you go to jail."

"Do you think that Jason, I mean Brian, would like to be my best man?"

A voice from the doorway shouted, "You bet I would, and you can call me Jason. You have the right. You are my father." He came over and hugged my while trying not to cry.

"I understand that you have been seeing Trudy. How has that gone?"

"First, I was angry because her husband shot you. I thought she might have been in on it. Once I was sure she wasn't, it was just awkward for a while. She has confessed everything. I know she's in a lot of trouble, but I hope she doesn't spend too much time in prison."

"I don't guess she wants to talk to me."

"She doesn't think you would want to talk to her."

"I really would like to know why?"

A woman's voice was clear but soft, "Because I was selfish, stupid, and naive. Darren seduced me and convinced me that you were keeping us from our fair share of the money. He was so dominant whereas you were, well more submissive. It didn't take long for me to realize what a mistake I made. Before I knew it, Brian had been taken from me and that was all that I could think of for years. Darren kept giving me hope that he would be found and returned to us. It seemed too much trouble to divorce him. We knew you were the father, but he was our son in our minds. A piece of me was missing for years, no, wait, two pieces of me were missing for years. Now, I have them both back only to know they will be taken from me when I go to prison. I know, 'do the crime, do the time.'"

"What do you think of the job Leila did in mothering your son?"

"The more I learn of her, the more I am grateful for what she has done. She's a real jewel, Andy. Take good care of her."

"I plan to. I plan to."

EPILOGUE

Trudy gave up her custodial rights to Brian/Jason before she left for prison. Leila and I were given custody. We made sure he got to visit her regularly. The only break in our visiting her was when Leila and I went on our honeymoon. I never could get used to calling her Julie.

Darren was sentenced to 15 -- 20 years for attempted murder and filing false charges against me. He was having a tough time adjusting to prison. After a couple of stabbings, he took his own life. His shares in the company were split between Trudy and me according to his will. Trudy gave me proxy rights over her shares. I was back in charge of the company. Leila became our CFO. I was proud when Jason said that after college that he wanted to come work for me.

When Trudy got out of prison, she took over as CFO for the company, and she still had her original shares plus half of Darren's. Leila had more important duties: being a stay-at-home mother to Jason's little brother and sister. Trudy lived by herself in a small house. She never went on a date although there seemed to be several men who hoped she would change her mind. Right now, she is concentrating her attention on one particular young man who is about to go off to college. She says she might be interested in another man later.

Sometimes I get asked if I was sorry that I kidnapped my son and took him from his mother. I say, "No, no, and hell no. It was not just a kidnapping, it was a Just Kidnapping."

You write like a Disney writer. Alot of your plot points were the same as "somehow Palpatine returned".

Oh, forgot ALL conversations in jails/prisons between inmates and visitors are recorded so when his "best friend" came to see him to gloat it would have provided him with all the evidence needed to clear his name! Remembered that hole just as I posted previous comment and had to mention it as it was another story breaking hole.

For starters you don't get arrested for "white collar crimes" they have to be investigated and have a judge sign a warrant for your arrest - that is if the judge finds the evidence convincing enough to have the DA file charges against you. Also no family court judge would sign off a divorce when the wife is pregnant. There were several other gaping holes in the story but I'm to tired to go over them all, you're a great writer "luv several of your stories" but you need to stay away from storylines that have alot of content of which you don't know much about, just ruins them turning 5 into 1's.

This story flowed well, and was realistic with emotions and determination. A keeper!

Skippy seems to have skipped common sense today!

Yet another' loving wife' leaving her husband for a man with a bigger dick. Yet another failure to explain how she could have known his dick size if she wasn't already fucking him. I dream of a day when I never have to read another story fixating about dick size.

@AnotherChapter thank you for calling out all of these ridiculous plot points. I think the most egregious is at the end when the whore who became his "wife" then becomes the CFO of the company he is now in charge of after over a decade of mowing lawns and not being involved in the company at all.

A few inconsistencies that made this story not as good as it could have been. Still enjoyable but a bit weak in a believable plot line. BardnotBard

After all the lies and sending him to jail I don't see him doing anything to help his ex-wife. Let her rot in jail.

A weak writer

Too many holes and things that made no sense. He got out of prison and had money to start a business? He gets DNA results on his sone in no time, picks up a whore to make a fake marriage, his arch enemy, who steals his wife and his business, who tries to kill him, leaves him half his shares in the winery he stole? His ex-wife suddenly confesses to larceny and is filled with remorse? I have used some big manure spreaders on our ranch, but nothing to compare with this!

Really? On this fact pattern Darren had left Jim part of his estate in his will, but tried to kill him?

If this was just done by the author to keep Trudy from getting control of the company, then maybe the writer could have had different ownership shares in the beginning or dealt with them another way.

If you can plan a successful kidnapping, you can plan a successful killing! He should have just gotten rid of the traitors.

Darren was evil and so was Trudy for going along with all his shit. Darren doesn't seem like the type to convince himself Brian was his son. He may show that outward to friends and associates, but why would he really think Brian was his son? Was he sterile and he wanted a ready made family? Clearly money was a big factor for both Darren and Judy. But sounds like Darren was a pussy hound. Why saddle himself with Trudy once he got control of the company. Or maybe he still needed her shares? Seems hard to imagine Darren just suddenly wants to settle down. Sure seduction and adultery .makes sense, but was a pregnant Trudy such an amazing catch? Trudy being seduced by big dick (sigh more of the LW trope) Darren is par for the course on this site to set up the betrayal and the story. But how would she be convinced to have her husband be falsely imprisoned? That seems a stretch, except she is I guess pretty evil. And yet later on she is so remorseful. Huh? Why? Because she lost Brian? And her she claims that she couldn't be bothered to divorce Darren since she lined for her lost son for over a decade. Again huh? Character motivations are weird in this story except for the money angle, and yet neither Darren nor Trudy seen to get all that much money in the end anyways. Certainly not enough to get a good PI firm to track her ex down. Then again they offer a reward for their "son". Not sure how the MC gets away from a kidnapping charge. Most of the amber alerts posted involve a biological parent running off with their kid. That stuff is serious. Parental interference after 12 years? Really? Then nothing happens because Trudy signs over custodial rights. Darren is an asshole but is on the birth certificate. The MC having DNA proof doesn't give him the carte blanche to kidnap the baby. Courts would have to decide on a claim of custody and in this case, MC has zero chance even with DNA proof. 12 years hiding only makes things worse in the eyes of the courts. Doesn't seem credible.

Yep Trudy deserved to have a dirt nap, the shit she pulled was not just unforgivable but worthy of a death sentence, that would be true justice. What you think that's harsh? Let's go over what the evil whore did, she betrayed her husband, cheating on him, she conspired against him, stole his business, set him up to spend almost a decade in jail, to forever carry the title of felon. And to top it all off, steal his son from him. Effectively inflicting a life sentance of suffering in a living hell upon an innocent man who was a good husband. So yes I do think that a dirt nap would have been easily justifiable!
