As she reached for the item he was handing her Don began talking again. He said, "Jasmine I'm down here groveling at your feet. I'm begging you. Will you marry me? You have put the sunshine back into my life and I'm only happy now when I'm with you."

Just as Jasmine's fingers touched the box her mind deciphered what Don was saying. She closed her hands over the box and said, "What? Did you say...?"

Jasmine opened the small box and saw a beautiful ring nestled in the interior. Her mouth dropped open. She gasped and held her empty hand to her mouth. Then she slowly removed the ring from its container. In slow motion she looked at it then began sliding it onto her left ring finger. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. She dropped to her knees and gave Don a deep, long, sensuous kiss. "Yes," she moaned. "Oh yes. I love you with all my heart and I've dreamed for months that you loved me too."

The house broke out in whistles and catcalls. When Jasmine came up for breathe she saw Don's entire family gathered around. Don's brother pulled her to her feet and hugged her then she was passed from person to person as they hugged and congratulated the happy couple.

Jasmine set a June wedding. Over the intervening months she slowly moved her things from her small apartment into Don's home.

At the reception after the wedding Don and Jasmine were opening the gifts. Buried at the bottom of the pile was a lone, yellowed envelope. Inside was a heart shaped valentine that seemed as old as the envelope. The original signature had been erased. It looked like it might have been Don. Written on the valentine were the words, "I received this valentine from the only man I ever loved on our first valentines day. I have treasured it ever since. Somehow it seems appropriate I pass it on to you now. Perhaps it is a symbolic passing on of his heart from me to you. May the rest of your life be filled with love and consideration for one another. May you never break the other's heart or let foolish pride tear you apart. Congratulations. I wish you both a life of love and happiness. With all my love Victoria."

I like this one because it is the perfect transition from hardboiled divorce alienation and action movie style agony before action to a Debbie Macomber or Jan Karon ending. Maybe work in some Barbara Pym or Jack London?

Good story although a bit typical with the relationship of the mc and the other mans wife. A new relationship with the ex might have been more logical.

Didnt quite understand what the adulterers were trying to achieve, it supposedly wasnt for the sex so having got away with it a few times why keep going. But i understand it was just a story, just not altogether logical..

I kinda feel bad for Victoria. She was too smart for her own good, and too stupid to realize what she could lose.

She worked at being right rather than being happy. It’s a shame.

Thanks for an enjoyable read, I agree with all the commentators who are satisfied with the way this played out (divorce). The cheating spouse can repeat "I love you" over and over, it doesn't matter. First of all, the faithful, betrayed party has no reason to believe that statement, and secondly love as in infatuation is not enough to make a marriage work. On the other hand, under the circumstances depicted here, I don't think the female MC does love her husband. My personal believe is that a long lasting love is only possible on the basis of friendship, founded on trust, sympathy, respect and on having similar values and priorities in life.

The cheating wife in this story was planning, scheming and betraying for six years- just to make a point and to prove to be more clever than Don. By doing all that she violated a whole number of the above mentioned preconditions for a committed monogamous partnership.

Thanks again to the author for this offering, I read it for the second or third time now, gave it 5 stars way back when and stand by it.

my difficulty with this story is deciding if it was good or great. Thanks!

"Can't you forgive me?"

"forgive you for being so stubborn that you had an affair that lasted six years to prove a flippant hypothesis AND you got more excitement from feeling vindicated and the secrecy rather than the sex?"

What doomed this marriage for me was the duplicity. Fake ID's and other accoutrements of a false identity

just to play a game that went on for far too long? No, the trust was gone. They still loved each other but

the kind of doubt she created would kill any marriage. I have never really bought into the cheated on spouses

getting together. Too pat and too convenient to be likely to really happen. Makes for a good Hollywood ending, though. Told a good story.

As Well As This Story

Was written there is no doubt in my mind the author could have crafted a different arc where the marriage could have saved to my satisfaction. However, he chose to end it and I'm quite content with that especially having been in Don's position decades ago. It also helps that I liked Jasmine a lot and I see that marriage lasting till one of them passes on. The yellowed Valentines card at the end was an incredibly good way to end the story. Even though the cheaters went to great links to plan their escapades it demonstrates perfectly the truth that highly intelligent people are not always the smartest ones in the room. I don't believe that cheaters will always get caught, there are too many variables like the length of the cheating, how often, locations, etc. I do believe the odds are against keeping it hidden in the long haul like 6 years. A one off, out of town, one time with no further contact one could get away with. But these folks were an exception to get away with it for as long as they did and only succeeded due to their involved and careful planning.

I didn't bother to scroll down the comments to see if I left one the first time I read it or not, or if I did if my reaction was the same as it is now. But no matter, I gave it 5 stars then and saved it as a favorite so those feelings remain the same. Signed: BTW

Amazing story (not a surprise from this author). I do agree that public proposals aren't a good idea, but that doesn't detract from story quality. Best revenge is living well.
