Our waitress returned with our coffee and made a fuss of putting it on the table along with more napkins. She put a little plastic tray on the table with the check in it.
My mother couldn't look at me; she stared vacantly out the window.
I stood up, pocketed my phone, picked up my coffee and squeezed out of the booth, ready to leave.
My mother's hand shot out and gripped my wrist. She looked up at me beseechingly.
"So... is that all?" mother whispered; her voice no longer haughty but cowed and subdued.
"Oh no mother; that is not all. We've only just begun," I smirked back at her.
I left her to get the check and strode out of the coffeehouse.
