It was both a good story and his was a reasonable reaction - until you RAAC'd them. Whether or not she's going to counseling or Gamblers anonymous I don't see how that changes anything. Well... I guess the ex wife got what she wanted. The thing about addictions, is it usually starts with someone, who has low self esteem. They aren’t particularly successful, or happy in life. The addiction is an escape for them. I knew a heroin addict, who worked in my place of employment. Her life was all about getting clean for a year or so, then finding a new guy in her AA type support group, and going back to using for another year or so. What I figured out about her, is she never developed the life skills to be successful enough at work, to support herself. She used her addiction for drastic weight loss, as she would gain a lot while “ on the wagon”. This helped her attract men, who funded her lifestyle. What most people don’t understand, is that you can’t beat addiction by meetings, or rehab. The only path forward, is to fix whatever is wrong with that person or their life. They must be able to find a productive life outside the addiction, and be happy with it. Easier said than done. As far as the husband in this story, I would not have remarried her. Addicts need to believe there is a consequence for their actions. Allowing her access to his money, is a sure fired way to get her to relapse. Next time, it might be a visit to a Vegas with a male Co- worker for a few days.... Addicts are never 100% cured. They are just waiting for the next trigger, to get them to relapse. Can you live with someone, not knowing if today is the day, they are going to do it?

I missed your post and read it after Someone did a rewrite. I found the rewrite to be crap because Henry’s reaction was violence and then he lost the moral high road by cheating with the other wives. I didn’t understand why the reconciliation in that story as it did not fit.

I looked up your story hoping for a more reasonable response from Henry. Something where he and the other wives stay true to themselves and their vows. i Enjoyed your story up to the epilogue. Knowing the original story is a reconciliation means Henry is a weak man in both versions Yes losing a spouse is hard, it is supposed to be. When you just take the person back after being cheated on and humiliated in front of your friends you are now betraying yourself by accepting a fake version of what you used to have.

I really enjoyed this story the first two times I read it, giving 5 stars. Short, Henry is true to himself, no overblown violence, he just leaves and divorces her. The reconciliation at the end was appropriate, given her understanding of her addictive behavior and acknowledgement of the disrespect she showed him. She apologizes and walks away without begging or demanding anything. As Henry still loves her, starting over seems appropriate. And Mark get his!
