"You Ok?" I asked.
"Yes. I've been with him for months watching him leave me. The tears are shed, the heartbreak is over. Now he's free. No more pain. I hope God lets him be naked in Heaven."
They dressed and I notified the nurse that Jack was gone. She knew. He was on monitors and had DNR on his chart.
A week later I answered the phone and it was Bart. "I just wanted you to know, my sister died this morning. The funeral is day after tomorrow and if you show I'll kick your ass."
"Thank you for telling me about Elaine. I liked her. We completed our lives together at Marie's funeral. I won't be coming back to California."
"She left you some things."
"Can they be mailed?"
"Yes."
I gave him the address and he hung up. I wondered what Elaine would have left me, or us.
When the package arrived Megan, Jake and I opened it together. There was an envelope addressed in Marie's handwriting for each of us. Another envelope was addressed to me in Elaine's hand.
Each of us had a letter from Marie apologizing for how she had been so bad and wrong, ruining her own life and ours. The letter from Elaine also apologized and included a notice that I was the beneficiary of her life insurance.
Jake stayed and worked for SDP. He went to school and studied business. He dated Kim and got her to go to college too. The June they graduated they got married. Megan walked down the aisle as her matron of honor.
Sitting by myself near the end of the reception while Megan danced with Jake, I thought back and came to the conclusion that life is full of consequences. Some intended and some unintended. And, Life is good.

Bfreetorunalmost 10 years agoThank you for writing this, Scorpio. This is a different type story and was very interesting. I thought it ended abruptly but you got all the necessary information so just forget the mild complaint. Being raised by religious fanatics I can certainly empathize with the recipients of Marie's craziness. This was certainly believable and brought bad memories to me although Mother was not quite that crazy. We discovered that she had multi-infarct dementia and the doctor said that these little strokes she had throughout her life led to her crazed treatment of her friends and relatives the last few years of her life. Thankfully she died calmly and sometimes realized where she was. Sorry for all the personal stuff, this story brought it out. Thank you again for writing this.
Anonymousover 10 years agonothing you could call erotic in it but the whole thing just rolled along at a good pace and showed the evolving love for all the people they came in to contact with and the building up of trust and relationships....a great story - loved it - it was very sad when his ex wife died and the uncle was just a total jerk.....when they visited the dying Jack in hospital and she then Elaine let him have one last suckle on their nipples was just so touching and tender....what a great family they ended up with at the resort....just how life should be...made me shed a few tears .....
Anonymousover 10 years agoIt is a story of courage. Well, maybe self-confidence is a better word. Either way, there are a lot of us who live by someone else's rules and it really doesn't matter whether the rules are religious, ideological or otherwise. They opress, but lots of us haven't got the courage to even admit the fact to ourselves. And that usualy results in our great loss.
I guess the erotic or rather sexual nature of this story is just designed to draw more attention or maybe also to say that we are the least confident in this field.
Yes, this is the message: live independently or you die.
