Gary heard everything she said. She was blaming herself for everything. It was another manifestation of her illness; she was treating Church and Snyder like two innocents while she took all the blame. Korlov would work on that. He reached out and pulled his wife into his arms, “I love you Jessie. I’ve loved you from the first day I saw you.” He hesitated, “Are you listening?”

Wiping her tearstained face, she nodded.

He went on, “If I left, if I moved away, I still wouldn’t be gone. I learned something. I could leave you, but you’d never be out of my heart, I’d never really be away. Jessie I’ll love you till God takes one of us away, and I promise, that’s the only way we’ll ever be separated.”

She started shaking in his arms. He kissed her forehead, “We’ve done some wonderful things together darling, and there’s still a whole lot more to be done. Our whole lives are still in front of us.” He kissed her again, this time on the side of her head by her ear, “Remember, for richer or poorer, till death do us part.” He used a hand and turned her head so she was facing him, “Got it?”

She shivered, “You mean it? You really mean it?”

“I mean it. I really mean it.”

They drove home in silence. Gary kept thinking, it was October, ten months, but they were there. He’d held on, and she’d made it.

As he pulled the car in the driveway Jessie started again, “Gary I’m scared.”

“What of?” he asked.

“This baby inside me,” she pressed her hands against her tummy. “What if something’s wrong? I’m old. I’m thirty-seven. What if it’s deformed or born retarded?”

He put one hand on her stomach and another around her shoulders, “Stop that nonsense. Our baby will be perfect. She’ll be a girl. We’ll name her Brandy. She’ll be the luckiest little girl alive because she’ll not only have you and me, and two grandmothers and a grandfather, but she’ll have three big sisters who’ll mother, and cherish, and spoil her. Jessie, all our tomorrows are going to be bright and cheerful. They’ll be filled with happiness and love.”

She looked up at her husband, “God I love you Gary.”

“And I love you Jessie.”

She pressed her head on his shoulder, “Carry me inside.”

He asked, “Why, something wrong?”

She grimaced, “No, just carry me.”

He looped his arms under her and lifted as he leaned from the car.

Jessie chided, “Not that way; do it the way you used to.”

Not sure what she wanted he lifted her like she was a baby. “Like this?” he asked.

“It’ll have to do,” she muttered.

And so on and so forth...

~~~V~~~
So was there a happily ever after? Yes and no. Jessie kept her partnership. The real leaders at the law firm took over, and at home it was more of the usual, with good days and bad days. Gary’s mom moved in. She brought the second Labrador Gary had bought. Daisy got jealous. The cat started using the litter box again. Gary and Melanie went hunting. Dorothy took the fall semester off. Katy found a new boyfriend. Jessie’s parents got miffed. Jessie stayed in counseling. Dr. Korlov got to meet and work with the girls. Neither Jessie nor any of the kids needed a kidney, a piece of liver, or marrow or anything like that. Yes, they were all obscenely healthy. Jessie was still sick, and had her moments. The girls needed a whole family. The fourth baby came, it was a girl, and they did name her Brandy. There were no easy answers, there never are, life just goes on.
The end.
Incredible comeback with a twist. Gary had the strength of a biblical prophet or saint. Ironic when adult acts like a child and children have to act like responsible adults. Great pathos to overcome as a family team with friends. The saga continues, eh?
Smells strangely of Cagivagurl's misandry. Do us all a favor, this isn't the site for a literary opus, stop trying so hard.
The premise of the story was interesting but I thought it was too long and way too convoluted. The story could have been done in just a few short chapters. It’s like going to a movie and you start to check your watch repeatedly midway through, your eyes start wandering and the ass starts to itch, thinking if it should end soon.
It was an interesting experiment. I real life, I doubt it has anything close to such a hard fought agonizing struggle to get to an ending with some reconciliation. I say some because she will never be cured. Her disorder is just that rough and tough. Maybe some of the meds will help even out some balance as we saw the last two chapters, where she coukd say something awful, and then come around and either be scared or asking him for a favor. Think the author made it clear, describe the intense rollercoaster, that deep down she did love her husband as much a person who is so clearly mentally ill could. It wad her betrayal of her marriage by accepting the bet, yet still fighting for partnership, forcing her to make some awful choices first with Snyder (Mr pump and dump) and then blowjobs and handjobs (ever so often) with the old goat Mr Church and again the feckless Mr Snyder. But honestly the sex under intense sexual harassment and a deranged bet was not thr main thing (remember she bet on staying married), it wad her inability to accept any fault for what she did with first Snyder and then Church, that set the fuse. This opened th gateway to a lot of negative reassessment of their marriage and the growth of her hatred for her husband, which really appeared to be hatred for herself and what she had done. Thankfully she went to a psychiatrist, and in co fidence snd hypnotherapy, the psychiatrist could see her real feelings. And while going for partnership and being mariee with three daughters was a bone of contention and irritation in her life, the bet put her husband and her career on a collision course and the predators put a wedge in their marriage and then all but forced the sex acts (first just the short sex scene with Snyder) via harassment and extortion within thr confines of a sick bet. With her mental problems, once she feel from grace, her mind magnified her betrayal by 10 or 100 times and she became obsessed, but inverted back on her husband as if it was actually his fault since otherwise she would go insane. Not she never slept with any of the other guys she dated. She did that to hurt her husband, but since the partnership was not at stake, she performed no sexual acts with them. Truthfully this story is not about infidelity. It is about a mental illness that will never be cured. She will still have bad days and unload on Gary and even to a lesser extent her daughters. But she will also have better days. When she swings to the dark side, she will not go full nuclear. Her biggest fear was ironically losing him forever, hence her lack of admission of any wrongdoing, her lack of confession. Of course her massive unloading on him with thr separation and divorce during Jan and February almost accomplished what her core personality was terrified woukd happen. Such was her obsession with the partnership and her own self loathing over her betrayal of her marriage under pressure from the bet. To be honest she deep down never despised him for his career. She might have come to respect his choices and lack of economic fortitude with time, while surrounded by the primadonna lawyers and especially when Snyder and Church started to drive the wedge (Church from the shadows). But on the other hand, the author made some of the scenes in the first five chapters so intense with her disdain, vehemence, and vitriol, it is hard to see anyone staying together regardless of kids, in real life. Also to be fair, since his name is on the title, regardless of what she wants with his leaving, no matter what her lawyer tries, he coukd just stay in the house. This woukd driver her absolutely batsh$t crazy and force her to do and say some extreme stuff that woukd end up getting her committed or at the very least disbarred (e.g. framing abuse and being hit with filing false charges). Remember the house was wired. If the husband wanted revenge he coukd have easily got enough footage or recordings to get her in serious trouble regarding custody and maybe even committed. Or she flakes out and attacks him and succeeds and she goes to jail or she tries to kill herself. In hindsight, him separating from her and moving out for like 5 months til Memorial Day, probably spared her ruination. This was not a btb story. That wad not the author's intent. It wasn't even a RAAC because there is a large cost that was paid by both, and will continue to pay to some extent the rest of their married lives. If it were a btb, her goose coukd have been cooked any ways given her unstable emotional behavior. But instead it was a complex experiment and in depth fictional story of mental illness. BPD is a bitch. I know because one of my parents was mild BPD (worse with age) and the other parent a strong NPD (mellowed somewhat with age). Trust me that sucked growing up and left a lot of scars for years until I married a woman in graduate school who showed me what love really could be like. Anyways 5 stars for an interesting case study, but the husband did come off as a masochist chapters 2 through 7, where he just kept getting run over by her dark moods. Ironically his relationship with Carolyn, spurred his wife into some changes to get him to not desert her. Then the incident with Katy, etc. In the end he find a way to manipulate her psychologically (at least when she is on medication for her condition) to maneuver her into some important life decisions. But still wow that has to be agony. Would like to say he is a saint / martyr, but masochist keeps coming fo mind. Hence a fictional experiment that seems highly unlikely in real life to get from pinyin A to point B. Btw love the use of vocabulary words. Kudos.
