Early the next morning after breakfast with my parents, I stood quietly on the front porch, wondering where the day would take me after the revelations of the previous day.

On hearing the crunch of tyres on loose gravel, I looked up to see Russell Feldham's large Mercedes approaching ahead of a cloud of dust. Maria sat beside him and the two were engaged in animated conversation, continuing even when the car drew to a halt a few metres from where I stood.

I strode to the driver's door as Feldham emerged, ignoring his outstretched hand.

"What the hell do you want?" I snarled.

He returned a wistful smile and said: "I came to return something that belongs to you."

He turned to the back of the car, retrieving two large suitcases and placed them at my feet. I looked on, puzzled, failing to notice that Maria had emerged from the passenger side of the car. Russell returned to the driver's seat, fired up the 'Benz' and reversed sharply away before swinging the big car back onto the track and disappearing in another cloud of dust, leaving his wife standing beside me.

Epilogue:

Russell never spoke to his mother again, not even when she was diagnosed with cancer a few months after their estrangement. Maria's mother suffered a different punishment. Her husband was disgusted with what she had done and the two argued constantly. When the news became public, as it was destined to do in a small community, she was shunned by all her friends. Eventually the pressure became too much, they divorced and she never had the opportunity of seeing her grandchildren growing up.

The parish priest annulled the marriage with the blessing of the bishop in the city, leaving Maria free to marry again -- this time for love.

After I completed my internship, Maria and I bought the abandoned bank building and manager's house in town, converting it into a veterinary base with a livestock yard behind. The first few years were tough, but I was accustomed to financial hardship and we made do -- even when the first of our three children came along. As my reputation grew, the practice thrived, to the extent that farmers from miles away brought their livestock to me for treatment.

These days I work a couple of days a week, overseeing the team of the four vets who now run the practice, one of whom is our eldest daughter. Our son runs the farm with his wife and two children. It is now turning a nice profit since he specialized in rearing llamas.

Me, well I play a bit of golf and spend as much time as I can with Maria and our grandchildren.

I'm curious on how my wife @LadyLore is the only person who has read and commented on this story showing any kind of brains and common sense. I mean come on people there is quite a few questions that should be asked. My wife is correct that was a very quick courtship he asked her out she said yes, they dated then married all of that in less than a year , I believe they were already having an affair while she was still dating the other guy so him taking her back no questions asked it's unbelievable

I'm not sure if I can get behind this story or not there is a few questions that was left unanswered 1 why couldn't she post her own letters 2 why couldn't she get her own mail and 3 that was a really quick courtship they started dating and then married all in less than a year only way that's going to happen is if she was already having an affair with the guy during her relationship with the other guy and he clearly put on a act about not knowing what was going on but had no choice but to back out and have the marriage annulled when she called him on it and then it's the ordeal how the other guys mom was really excited that her sons ex married another man after dating him for less than a year like she was a part of the equation as well even if there was a good reason for all the things I listed which there isn't going to be without being a excuse her leaving her husband for another man is over the top however I believe all the women even the 1 guy was in on the deceit and then they cooked up a scheme that she goes back to him but still fucking the other because she had to already have been sleeping with him to get talked into dating and then marriage in less than a year

Don't they all interfere? A good plot, I'm not sure about some of the legal aspects but hey! Good plot but characters need more depth and resolution.

I really liked the premise. My only critique is that with such a complex storyline there needs to be more explanation at inflection points. I do find your Russell character a highly honorable man, but would have liked to have seen more story regarding how he came to his decision. Also, more of the interaction between Maria and the MC as she came back to him. That could not have been so quick a discussion. Also, I would have loved some background on the two mothers as they came up with this plan. Still, I really loved the concept. Great job and good imagination.
