Elsie shrugged and tried to smile. "You're welcome. I'm glad I was able to help clean; I appreciate this chance to work off my debt. I know we didn't get everything done tonight, but there's always next time."
Jessie nodded but seemed distracted; she waved a hand in the air. "Yes, but. I mean. Thank you." Her eyes met Elsie's, quiet and serious. "I know I'm not the wife Kevin expected. I appreciate your... help."
Eyes flying wide at everything left unsaid between the two women, Elsie just nodded. Making polite excuses for the time, she collected her spring jacket and darted out the front door, walking back home as quickly as her sore thighs would allow.
