I thought I was in for one of Anna's classic sharp tongued scoldings, but she said nothing. She had none of her usual cool air and instead appeared flushed and confused. It seemed as if she was unwilling to acknowledge what had just happened between us, even if it was to condemn it. She swallowed then cleared her throat, and squeaked out a hasty "Well, good night. I hope you don't mind taking the couch? I'll see you in the morning." before bolting into the one bedroom and slamming shut the door.
I stared after her, stunned. I felt like all of my blood had pooled down below, and I didn't have enough power in my brain to understand exactly what just happened. All I knew was that there was a beautiful girl naked in the next room whom I desperately wanted to touch. But she had clearly cut that liaison short and I was not about to barge in on her against her wishes.
Yet as I settled down on the narrow couch and did my best to arrange my small towel like a blanket to cover as much of my body as possible, I couldn't help looking forward to tomorrow. Perhaps this trip might not be totally miserable after all...
