Good story, I like how the author plays with the timelines, even the flashback don't feel unnecesary or forced.

Bad war and bad reaction by young liberals who thought they knew it all. 50 thousand soldiers dead because of politicians decisions. Please don't vote for incumbents we need new people each year to bring some sanity and respect back to congress. Thank god more respect is being show today for people who serve our country. Good story sad subject

There’s not a day goes by that my mind doesn’t take me back to that war. The sights, the sounds, the smell. Oh God, that smell. If you were there you know exactly what I mean. It’s been 51 years and it still eats at me. I did two tours in Marine rifle companies. My biggest regret about the whole damn thing is that I can’t get past the bitterness that has eaten at me all these years. We, every man and woman who were sent to Vietnam, were betrayed by our own country. The government and the people. I just can’t see it any other way. Thanks for the story, Slirpuff.

it feels unfinished.

AnonymousAnonymousabout 2 years ago

I agree with another anon commenter...it feels unfinished. And it is! Hated that he had to go through such hell after nam.. he and many others wet through the same hell. Thanx to our politicians. They defrauded us. LP

I thought the story was great, thanks for sharing it with us. As a side note to the 2 most recent anon commenters, chapter 2 was posted back in 2016. It's finished.

I read both awhile back. I'm an old Marine. Too young for Nam, too old for anything else. Non combat. I couldn't re-read this. Even in peace time, military people die. It was a well written story. You are very good. Semper Fi.

As a veteran of 30 years service and having been to some very unpleasant places and in situations similar to the the man in this story I can empathise. I suffered for years with nightmares and flashbacks until after many years I was diagnosed with PTSD for which I underwent treatment and now, thankfully, I am able to deal effectively with this disorder. Sadly people who have never been in the military or seen active service can never fully appreciate the psychological and physical trauma veterans go through. A very well written story for sure. Thank you for writing it.

although I was never sent to Nam I was in the military at that period, I have friends that were and this tale rings true for many. Loved the story.

This is a sad tale that applies to many, but not me. I had THE GOVERNMENT MANDATED MILITARY SERVICE behind me when all that started. I feel for those who were FORCED to go, or else go to jail. Worse, the same sorry government didn't give those they forced to go the tools and support needed to win. Now, when people tell me ' Thanks for your service' I tell them it wasn't of my choosing, I was forced into it. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! Pearl Harbor and it's aftermath was a time to fight, not some BS crap like korea or viet nam. The movie First Blood is a good example of the treatment our viet nam vets recieved even if it was set in Hope B.C. Canada. I could go on and on, but the point is our wonderful government and it's sorry liberal leaders caused a lot of pain and grief for a lot of people. I was mad as Hell then and I still am. The people that get us into these situations are a bunch of sorry S O Bs.

The way of our world, the little people do all the heavy lifting and dying, they send us to war we die or do the killing and for what? So some politicians, and industrialists can claim all those blood dollars?

All most little people want is a family, job and house and to be left alone to enjoy our honest labour....seems that's like winning the Lottery...nigh impossible.

5 stars even if it's really in the incorrect category.

I feel this might be your best work, going down your list, best so far.

There was a war going on in Nam and one here in the US. They burnt up parts of cities all over the country. Thousands of people were hurt or killed all over the US in protest it was a dark time. This story barely touches a lot of area but it is a great story for what it does tell

On page one. The rifle volley at graveside is not a Twenty One Gun Salute, which is reserved for presidents and other heads of state and royalty, and on certain patriotic occasions. It is fired by a succession of cannons or naval guns. One shot at a time

Back to the story.

A sad but true story. A lot of kids our age had their lives needed over there, some even died. But for those who lived and came home to the hate they got the nightmare went on. The lucky ones made it.

USMC volunteered. Viet Nam 67-68 Tet, married one kid, kicked out, divorced, drunk, drugged up, homeless, attempted suicide almost made it. climbed up top a very tall bridge to jump, jailed, homeless, lived in a abandoned car, years and years of counseling, married a new woman, kids, became an over achiever (paying the world back for the wrong I did).

I KNOW Steve's pain. Your story is spot on. Thank you! PLEASE keep writing!!!

I was one of the fortunate ones, I just missed the draft. My uncle wasn't as lucky, he left less than two months after getting there - in a box. For ANYONE who served in any capacity please accept my gratitude for what you did for others; some, what you still are going through. A very good story, almost a historical novel - thank you Slirpuff. 5 stars
