"Here, let's sit down," I said. "We need to talk."

"What? Everything is okay. We should go celebrate."

I took a deep breath. "Amanda, I'm not sure if I can do this anymore."

Fictional stories are multi-layered, and if they were only one-dimensional as suggested, cut-and-dried, few would be reading them. You can't say 1 + 1 = 3 even in fiction and expect readers to buy it.

Looking at some of the posts, about the bullying/cyberbullying debate going on here...

JUST WHAT IS THE REAL POINT OF THIS EXERCISE IN FUTILITY???!!! This story is fantasy...fiction...imagination!! Just like the story that Bella wrote about Mr Dillon.

Obviously, Mia and her groups of shitheads found Bella's notebook/diary when she collided with Mia, etc al at the door to Ryan's room when Mia was coming in to try to seduce Ryan by flashing him. It is QUITE OBVIOUS who the perpetrators of this outrageous behavior are; and, to not hold them responsible for their egregious acts that have tainted a respected teacher's reputation...just horrible!!

Still, this IS fiction...read it as such...

Five Stars...🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠💯

@pk2

The quote was the first hit on a google search, which upon clicking the link, came from the Philippines, House Bill 2321, signed in Quezon City, Metro Manila. The story transpired in CA.

Ca. enacted laws against this much sooner. This is from patch.com:

"In California, laws on bullying and cyberbullying date back nearly two decades. In 2001, the legislature required the Department of Education to develop model policies on the prevention of bullying and on conflict resolution, making it part of the school safety plan.

By 2008, the threat of cyberbullying was recognized by the legislature, as lawmakers gave school officials grounds to suspend a pupil or recommend a pupil for expulsion for bullying, including cyberbullying. Social media was specifically added to the law in 2011."

So CA law on this predates the story by a minimum of 5 years, up to 12 years before. (Curiously enough, GA was the first to enact anti-bullying legislation in 1999.)

Ryan (while it was not mentioned, but needed to be) was placed on "administrative leave with pay," as they had to look into it, which is SOP. So Bella would have had to be placed into DAEP pending the conclusion of the investigation, then be expelled, preventing her from returning--given the egregious nature of the offense, based on the overwhelming evidence, further aggravated by posting to social media.

" Republic Act No. 10627 or the "Anti-Bullying Act of 2013" is a relatively new law which seeks to address hostile environment at school that disrupts the education process which, in turn, is not conducive to the total development of a child at school."

This was still a new thing in 2013 . ( when the story takes place ) No one had been convicted yet . As far as I could find . Convictions didn't begin until a few years later . Very few of them at that . Of course in modern day . This is taken very seriously .

Ryan was innocent . No need to know the law .

There is a lot of value to posting that chapter now . Shock value . Ryans personal struggles with Amanda become clearer . If like a couple of you suggest . We have all the information upfront at the very beginning . It is then very hard to build a story . This approach / backstory . Is a intentional style that prolongs a story . It is very effective . Most/many prefer long building plots .

To have revealed it all at the beginning would have made for a much shorter story . I would not have liked it as much .

Well done author .

Solid chapter, although it should have been far earlier in the series to explain him returning to SD. Great misdirect from Mia to Bella. Pretty good drama, except that it collapses at several spots.

I would rate this one higher, if not for several glaring errors. One is yes, there was a crime committed, which was at least cyberbullying and/or student-to-teacher harassment. Legally, students tried to create an imbalance of power (over him), so that was proven. The harassment was one-time, but the intent was to damage his reputation--only question is which state it happens in and what are their punishments corresponding to these. The cyberbullying with the posting of pics and a diary is also libel; the school should have confiscated the phones and sent them to a cybercrimes squad at the local PD to track down the IPs and that would have proven who sent the damaging info; all students involved would have been automatically placed into DAEP on a minimum 30-day stay and once proven, expelled and sent to juvenile detention. It's that serious, and the "characters" are remarkably ignorant of the law. 3
