The Agency Ch. 26 (Mexican Getaway)

"That does sound pretty nice!"

"We can do it, babe!" Samantha said kissing me on the cheek before laying her head back down on my chest.

For the first time in over a week, I would be able to rest easy. A plan was in place. There was light at the end of the tunnel. It wasn't that I was ready to leave this job, if anything it was the contrary, but I was ready to find some sort of peace. Samantha seemed like the perfect type of peace.

"Maybe if we are both off at Christmas, you could come to Missouri with me to meet my family," Samantha said.

"I'd love that!"

It wasn't long before we adjourned to bed. It felt amazing to be lying in bed with someone I could see nothing but future with; someone that could become my wife, the mother of my children and a lifelong companion.

I awoke the next morning to a loud thud and the sound of a zipper opening. As my eyes came into focus, I could see Samantha at the foot of the bed throwing her clothes into her suitcase.

"What's going on?" I asked.

"I'm sorry I woke you," Samantha said as her glance darted across the room, in search of all her belongings, "My boss text me this morning and said they had gotten a call from my next client and that his production got moved up a week and he wanted me there today. I'm pissed that they gave me absolutely no warning and have stolen the last full day we were going to get together!"

I got out of bed and walked over to Samantha wrapping my arms around her, "It's okay, sweetie! We'll see each other soon enough and I'll do everything that I can to stay in touch until we can get back together. We don't have to wait too long for the day that neither of us will have bosses."

Samantha gave me a big long kiss, "I love you so much! I need you to quit being so awesome, because it is making it harder to leave," she said with a smile.

In a few minutes, Samantha was all packed and on her way back to the airport. The villa that had seemed so great for the entire week seemed less exciting now. The emptiness in the house only echoed the emptiness that I felt when she left.

A day later, the same car came pick me up with an envelope waiting inside. For the first time, the envelope didn't seem so exciting. It was just the first box on a checklist that I would need to start for the next two years. I didn't know how many assignments I'd get for two years, but I knew that I now had something to look forward to at the end of it all.

I opened the envelope and pulled out a boarding pass for New York City. The flight was long. Samantha had been right; flying private had ruined me for commercial. I tried to clear my mind and reset knowing a new assignment was waiting for me. I couldn't let my work performance slip if I wanted things to continue to move smoothly.
