"Can I explain?" I pleaded.
"I feel blind-sided. Duped. Lied to."
I didn't like where this was going after everything today had gone so well. But she was angry, fearful from what she had inferred from my entreaty, and seemed in no way interested in taking a pause, a breath, that is, and letting us talk on.
So I watched, sadly, as she slipped on her slacks, buttoned up her blouse, slid into her shoes and socks, collected her coat, walked out of the spare bedroom door, and clomped down the stairs. I heard the back door creak open and then slam shut. Followed by the dreadful silence.
Not the happily-ever-after ending that I was anticipating.
