I went over to her and held her hand, sadden by the bruises on her beautiful face and body. She evoked what was certainly a smile given her injured face and said "I want you to know that after the first time that we had sex I never had sex with anyone else except for you and Jared; and that after the second time that we had sex being intimate with you was the highlight of my life."

I started to say something but she hushed me. "I love you and I want you to marry me when I get better -- I'll sign any document that says I won't get anything if we divorce, but we never will because I'll make you the happiest man on Earth."

I tried to talk again but once more she shushed me. "Please don't say anything now Don. Just search your heart and see if you can love a reformed whore."

Then she sighed, closed her eyes, and seemed to pass out more than fall asleep.

****************

Alicia never wanted to talk about her two months in hell, and I never pressed her. But I was curious so I hired a PI firm to investigate.

After six weeks, and talking to law enforcement in two adjacent states and reviewing police files, the PI firm gave me their report. Jared was the one who beat Alicia and left her for dead when she told him she was leaving and going back to Crimson Court. The very next day the bad people who were after him found him one state over and executed him. After declining hospitalization Alicia got a charity to give her bus fare back to our city, and then got in a cab to go to my house. The rest I knew.

The taxi brought Alicia to my house twenty one years ago; we have been married the last twenty years and are about to leave on a trip to Europe to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We have three wonderful children and an aggravating cat. My life has been so rich in so many ways that are worth way more than all of the money I've ever accumulated.

What Alicia told me the day she arrived by taxi is the truest statement I have ever heard: "I'll make you the happiest man on Earth!"

His wife cheats with the pool guy and he throws her out on her ass, but he not only cheats with his married neighbour, but pays her like the whore she is and lives happily ever after? Get stuffed.

Nice story. I’m trying to figure out how a local guy worth more than $100M isn’t well known, has no name or face recognition, and keeps it that way. Neighbors would at least ask what he does for work, the company where he works, stuff like that as an icebreaker. If not, at least one person of the 14 couples would search online. Having no footprints is suspicious.

I'm of two minds about the story. The main and really only problem with it, is that she was cheating on her husband while married. The fact that the husband was a jerk is immaterial - cheating is cheating, unless he cheated first. And I hate it that she got rewarded for her cheating, basically.

On similar note, the protagonist seems to agonize for one day that he did what his ex did, then promptly and permanently forgets about any ethical issues about fucking someone else's wife.

On the other hand, the story is a beautiful F.U. to more "upstanding" society members who would look down on Alicia for basically being a whore - because, for all ethical intents and purposes, there was absolutely no meaningful difference between her, and his ex-wife; except she was honest about having sex for money and the ex wasn't. And that's a big social commentary.

No offense but I think this was just an okay story. It felt a bit impersonal, I guess I just didn’t emotionally attached to the MC or the girl or something. Alicia didn’t grab the heart strings and Don never connected with me as the reader. I’m not trying to to criticize the story, just explaining it as best I can so hopefully it helps in future stories. I wish I had an example to show what grabs my investment as a reader but it boils down to emotions really and I just didn’t feel connected with the characters.

Agree it was a Happy Hooker story, but a good one. A little unbelievable he would marry her, but still, 5/5. Thanks
