"Even the work," I continued. Not saying I want to spend my whole time doing housework, but I really didn't mind all that. I mean, I was pretty good at being a lawyer, but I was never really happy ..."

"But where does that leave you, Nikki?" asked Trudie. "You said you thought your marriage was over, but does Jillian agree? I mean I'm assuming she can't just come out and say that she's moving in with her stepfather, right?"

I gave a mirthless chuckle. "Yeah, that would certainly make for some interesting conversations with her mother ..."

One of the many things I didn't know was how my mother-in-law would react to the news that her handsome new husband was fucking her daughter - assuming she ever found out. Debra was a wealthy and powerful woman and there would have to be at least social consequences for offending her so badly. She might even take it out on me, especially if she learnt anything about my strange and compliant role in Warren's affair.

"Anyway," I continued, "I don't know what Jillian has in mind, or even what she thinks she really can decide. Or what going back to work for Warren would mean."

"Well, just because you've started your life one way, doesn't have to mean you're stuck like that," observed Mikayla, glancing sideways at Trudie, who grinned back at her. "You can be who you want to be."

I nodded. "You're right. I'm just not quite sure right now who I even am - or who wants me." I hugged my legs into my chest and let out a deep breath. "But I guess I'll find out soon enough ..."
