I blinked, surprised. "The basics, yes -- that you were illegally held as a slave, before going to the Circle and being recruited -- but not the details." I looked down at my hands, interwoven in my lap. "I didn't think it would help him to know everything."

The look of abject relief was painful to watch.

Finally, with a sigh, she met my gaze. "All of us -- Duncan and Maric and I, but also Genevieve, Utha, Kell and Nicolas -- were trapped in the Fade by a demon in Ortan Thaig. The demon took over my body -- apparently I became an abomination, though unwillingly. I can't tell you the details of the others' dreams, but I know that Maric broke out, rescued the others, and then came for me.

"For me...I was trapped in the basement of Count Dorian's manor -- where I lived until I was fourteen -- shackled, beaten, and bleeding, when the others arrived. They tried to fight the demon, but it was too strong. I fought back, distracting it enough that Maric was able to behead it. And we woke up, back in the Thaig -- all except Nicolas, who refused to come. We buried him under some rubble, and just...left him there."

There were fresh tears threatening again, and she wiped at her eyes angrily. "Does that tell you what you need to know?"

"Yes." I shot her a look of pure sympathy. "I'm sorry. I just had to be sure you are actually Fiona."

She pulled herself together almost visibly. "And if I hadn't been?"

"You'd never have left the Peak." I flinched at the truth that flew out of my mouth, unbidden. "We couldn't risk it. I messed up, earlier, admitting that you are Alistair's mother. If you'd been an imposter...we wouldn't have been able to let you go." I cringed inside, knowing I really would have held her -- maybe killed her -- to protect my husband, as awful as I knew that was.

She gave me a skeptical look, and then to my surprise, smiled broadly. "Good." When I blinked in confusion, she explained, "I'm glad to know my son has people who would do whatever it takes to protect him."

Thoughts on the future.

Here is a thought. Serra's powers as a Templar are based on her connection with Earth. So it stands to reason that if that connection is severed she would loose her ability. However if she was to be fully separated from her connection to earth then wouldn't the opposite extreme then be true. In my head I'm seeing a mage powerful enough to rival an ancient magaster.

And after all who is the must likely being to strike out at a Templar, that is strong enough to thwart his plans?
