In times of strife and doubt
the wicked breathe on without
a sign of failure or lust
that ends all as ends must.

The youthful souls learn so warily
'til time shapes them to souls wearily
slinking along the pass to heaven,
each lifetime feeling like seven.

Photos taken tell more than words
and words spoken tell more than looks.
We wait in fear and envy the birds
who have not citizens or crooks.

In times of strife and doubt
our goodness will not spout.
