Hello, I'm Marie Writer. I am a published author, (both sexual and non-sexual), as in I'm paid for my work, not paying someone to publish me. Yep- there is a difference between writing and editing-- However, Because of the way my editor works- I occasionally edit in the real world as well... I've learned it's a thankless job for those that do it for a living. I still remember well the pain of seeing my first accepted piece 'destroyed' by an editor. However, as an author and now occasional editor I have learned to have an appreciation of the process and it has honestly made me a better writer. I'm willing to share that painful knowledge so I at times, offer my services as a VE here. But, because so much is assumed, and occasionally 'demanded,' from an author, I have a few rules... I'll look over your stories for all types of editing, but help yourself first, if it's totally unreadable, I'll send it back without helping you at all. If I see basic craft errors like Quotations in the wrong place, time after time, I'll do a page maybe two, then send it back for you to go through. If you're going to write- then you should at lest know the basics of the craft, like grammar rules, and how to use punctuation. Everyone needs an editor at some point, even Hemingway had one... So don't get bent when your masterpiece needs work. Mine do as well... I have a list of what I will edit, as well as what I wont. If you have characters under 21, even in passing comments, pass me by. If your story contains incest, pass me by. I'm just not interested in those things. Same for your great American novel. I understand the need- I'm there too, but as a Volunteer, I am not interested in editing forty or fifty pages of text, nor am I interested in editing on-going works of art. One story at a time. And yes yes yes I get it-- You don't like my rules. I've only gotten a few dozen comments about them, so please, I'm volunteering, so I don't need anymore of those comments. I also speak Spanish, so I can help there some as well.
