from a chipped porcelain cup
waiting for my breakfast
which will soon be up,
Talking to the waitress
probably fifty-five
she asks me how it’s going
I say I’m still alive,
The eggs are slightly greasy
the sausage is ok
she asks what my plans are
for the rest of the day,
I tell her I am traveling
just passing through her town
she tells me I should stay awhile
I could stick around,
Duluth Minnesota
Uncle Loui’s Café
six o’clock in the morning
a lovely spring day,
The waitress fills my coffee cup
again, gives me a smile
tells me once again
that I should stay awhile,
I think about her offer
not completely sure its meaning
were we in a bar at midnight
each slightly leaning,
Against the other drinking
dancing, playing pool
going home together
like any other fool,
She gives me her number
writes it on a card
doesn’t seem the answer
should be this hard,
I thank her for the breakfast
and the offer to stay
another path not taken
what can I say?
