The landscape of memory
Limned by a many splendoured light
Of happy times past
with you
And with myself
And yet
When with me you were
By my side, in the damp of sand
Your footsteps too did make
Small, ephemeral oozing pools
While the shimmering scarlet sun
In the low slung arch of heaven
Was sinking fast midst the blood
Of a thousand tiny clouds
While you spoke and I answered too
I was not with you
The sea
Now vast, limitless, unfathomed deep
Now silently embracing the passive shore
Now whispers soft, now roars aloud
A moment still to collect itself
Then uncoils, roils rising high
Surges upwards, stretches, strains to kiss the sky
The sea
Restless, restive always like me
Enthralls me so with its primeval song
That myself foregone
I forget
Even you by my side
The sea
Tying together my anchorless present
To the fruits of man's common past
And the seeds of my own, signal future
The sea sings to me of those days to come
When my now will be a distant then
When I, by a coloured vision unclouded sight
Will see all that has been in unfettered light
When cherished voices unrivalled by noise will be
When each sense will relive every breath that's gone
When memory itself will be the scent of dusk and dawn
Then; says the sea, I shall know
Distilled, pure youth again -- the truth of myself
The moments selfishly shared with you
