He searched my features for signs of the girl
that sucked his dick beside the river
on a magic summer night long ago;
But he discerned only the same name
and a semblance of the remembered face,
but without the allure he recalled.
If he mined my thoughts he might unearth,
annealed like a death mask, the bare contours
of the lust and doubt that act inspired.
But, he wouldn't have found the love now sought,
that was not what he offered then, and
that was never part of my provenance
